Letter of Credit Expediters, Inc. has been providing export letter of credit services since 1991, and has been incorporated since 1994. Steve Slavik, President, started the company, and still actively manages day-to-day operations. He began LCE after working for 13 years in International Banking Operations with three banks: First National Bank in Dallas, Texas; Rainier National Bank in Seattle and New York; and Royal Bank of Canada in Portland, OR. He managed Edge offices for the latter two, and has taught international operations' courses at local banking and credit schools.

Mr. Slavik identified the void that was and is being caused in the exporting field by commercial banks' inability to process documentation quickly and inexpensively. The institutional behemoths carry large overhead expenses and administrative inefficiencies. They charge their customers on a percentage of the L/C amount, yet do the same amount of work for a $10,000 L/C as for a $1.0 million L/C. By specializing in processing, negotiating and obtaining payments quickly under Letters of Credit or documentary collections, LCE is able to charge a flat, fixed fee, turn around the processing of the documents for negotiation in less than a day, and, thereby, be responsive to exporters' first priority ... maximizing profit without jeopardizing relations with their foreign buyer.

After receiving or preparing the documents required under an export L/C, LCE processes the documents, working with the exporter and freight forwarder to ensure the documents will be paid under the L/C. This process is completed in less than a day and funds are usually received within three business days. Resultant payments are processed by LCE's agent bank through the Fed Wire to the exporter's account, without access by LCE. The agent bank also assists with correspondent bank communications. The flat, fixed fee charged by LCE includes the agent bank's handling fees.

The negotiators hired by LCE are ex-international bankers with training in export letter of credit documentation. They have all been selected to be customer oriented and professional in their dealings with exporters, freight forwarders, and paying banks.
